Educational Background

PhD, Physics, State University of New York at Albany, 1969
Foundations of Gauge Theory
BS, Physics, State University College at New Paltz, 1965

Biography

My role statement emphases are roughly equal in teaching, research, and service. That is highly unusual at USU. My teaching accomplishments have been recognized nationally by the Carnegie Foundation and locally at USU and other institutions. My research accomplishments have been recognized by a national prize from by the American Physical Society. My service contributions have been recognized by awards from USU and Union College. I wrote the applications that yielded the Physics Department's University Excellence in Teaching Award (2005) and the American Physical Society's Department of Distinction Award (2011).

Teaching Interests

I have taught 40 different undergraduate and 4 graduate courses at 4 institutions, and developed & introduced 24 of these into the curriculum; I have served as external reviewer for teaching programs at 8 colleges; I have organized 5 regional & national conferences on undergraduate research; I have run a 3-year NSF-REU program (at USU) in nonlinear dynamics for 40 students. My textbooks are: Komplexität: das gezähmte Chaos (Birkhäuser, 1995, with M. Frame & A. Ehlers) ISBN 3-7643-5132-2; Chaos Under Control: The Art & Science of Complexity (Freeman, 1994, with M. Frame) ISBN 0-7167-2492-4, and extensive free notes available at the Physics 2710 and 3710 websites.

Research Interests

I have, to date, 60 refereed publications (on gravity & fields, condensed matter physics, nonlinear dynamics, biophysics, & computational circuitry), with 30 student co-authors; 38 professional society presentations, with 23 student presenters. My students’ & my work has appeared in feature articles in Discover Magazine, Science News, & the Mathematical Calendar, been reviewed by Nature Science Update & in the magazines BBC Wildlife (UK), Swiat Nauki (Poland), & Donga Science (Korea), & been cited on Wikipedia & on over 40 other websites in eight countries.
